About 8-Bit Log
8-Bit Log is an independent, hobbyist journal about the 8-bit era of video games: the NES and Famicom, the Game Boy, the home computers, the arcades, and the people who made and played their games.
We publish slowly and on purpose — features, rankings, restoration guides and cultural notes, written from original hardware wherever possible. There is no news desk and no review embargo calendar here; the games we write about have been out for thirty years, and they can wait another week for us to get the details right.
What we cover
- Hardware — the consoles and computers of the 8-bit era, how they worked, and how to keep them working.
- Games — the cartridges that defined the period, revisited and re-argued.
- Music — chiptune composition and the sound chips that shaped it.
- Culture — arcades, high scores, magazines, and the social world around the games.
Editorial notes
8-Bit Log is a personal project, not a commercial publication. We do not take sponsorships, review copies or advertising. Opinions in rankings and features are ours, are argued in good faith, and are cheerfully open to dispute by post.
